about

Recombinations is a three track EP of ambient pieces. Embracing the notion that life defies linearity, this EP presents an exploration of imperfect moments that deviate from conventional narratives. Inspired by the Karlheinz Stockhausen’s concept of Moment Form, each piece within the EP encapsulates an individual, self-contained moment. However, collectively these moments create a mosaic of diverse experiences and atmospheres that reflect the imperfect and multifaceted nature of life.

In an endeavour to embrace the beauty of imperfection, each composition in this EP employs a process-driven approach, with the goal of celebrating the imperfect artefacts that arise from these processes. To enhance the immersive listening experience, binaural mixing has been utilised to accentuate specific atmospheric elements. To best hear the effect of this process it is recommended that this work is listened to
with headphones.

The title, Recombinations was inspired by genetic recombination. Similar to the formation of mosaics, genetic recombination relies on the amalgamation of individual fragments to create a whole.

Track one, “The Uncertainty Principle,” was inspired by the movement of particles and uses data of these movements to control different processes. Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle states that the measurement of a particle’s movement is fundamentally imperfect. This piece represents the way that the imperfection of our world persists down to the quantum realm.

Track 2, “Asynchronous Flight” is based on the movement of dragonfly wings, which unlike other insects, do not move perfectly in sync with one another. This lack of symmetry is what makes the dragonfly so agile, serving as a remarkable illustration of the benefits of imperfection.

The final piece, “Indivisible Symmetry,” revolves around a series of seven chords that are repeated seven times. The piece incorporates rhythmic patterns derived from a cyclic sequence of prime numbers that cannot be divided further. Through this fusion, the composition seeks to juxtapose the flawless nature of symmetry with the flawed nature of indivisibility.
